Mimi S. J. Hu, CPA, Macc – Partner/Principal   Mimi was born and raised in Shanghai, China and immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Chaminade University of Honolulu in 1986 and a Master of Accounting degree majoring in taxation from the University of Hawaii in 1988. She became a licensed CPA in Hawaii in 1989. In June 1991, Mimi started her CPA practice, Mimi S. J. Hu, CPA, Inc. with the initial staff of three “me, myself and I”. Over the years, the firm has grown to be one of the larger CPA firms in Maui. In October 2006, Mimi S. J. Hu CPA, Inc. merged with DK. Levin, Company and changed the firm’s name to Levin & Hu, LLP. Mimi enjoys playing piano and violin. She is also a grand master Sudoku player.

Douglas K. Levin, CPA, MBT – Partner/Principal   Doug grew up in the east, and later moved to Long Beach, California where he attended college and worked. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 1987. After receiving a Certificate in Accounting from California State University in 1993, he attended University of Southern California where he earned a Masters in Business Taxation in 1997. He has been a licensed CPA since 1995 in California, with a current license in Hawaii. Doug spent 7 years with Deloitte & Touche as a Tax Manager before moving to Maui, Hawaii in 2000. He was a tax partner in James & Levin LLC before opening his own practice, DK Levin, Company. In 2006, DK Levin, Company merged with Mimi S. J. Hu, CPA, Inc. and together formed a proficient firm not previously available on Maui. When he is not spending time with his young son, Declan and wife, Maureen, he donates his time to the community by serving on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Maui and the Maui County Salary Commission.

Kimberly Vanderlaan – Senior Manager   Kim graduated from the University of Nevada with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration majoring in accounting. She began her career with Ernst & Young LLP and has been a licensed CPA in Nevada since 1995. Kim has held Senior Management positions ranging from Controller to Chief Financial Officer in a variety of industries. She enjoys spending time with her family and outdoor activities.

Linda Leigh-Helbling – Manager   Originally from the Midwest, Linda lived in Saudi Arabia for 12 years worked for Saudi Arabian Oil Co. and other CPA firms. Linda moved to Maui in 1999. She is a graduate of Southern Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration majoring in Accounting. She is a licensed CPA in Colorado. Currently, she is in the process of being licensed in the State of Hawaii. She is experienced in expatriate and individual taxation. She has traveled extensively and continues to enjoy it. She plays a little golf and spends the rest of her time with her family.

Barbara Guest, CPA – Audit Manager  Barbara has lived on Maui for 27 years. After a ten-year work experience at the County of Maui, she returned to school and earned her Master of Accounting degree from the University of Hawaii. She joined Levin & Hu, LLP in 2007 as the audit manager. She resides in Kihei with her husband and two sons. During the summer, she looks forward to traveling. She enjoys reading in her spare time and jogging.

Tom Marino, CPA – Tax Manager   Tom graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Tom is a licensed CPA in both California and Hawaii since 1987. He has worked for several CPA firms on Maui, including his own practice in Lahaina before joining Levin & Hu, LLP. He has three grown children and enjoys fishing, hiking, and traveling.

Remalyn Rosete – Manager   Remalyn was born and raised on the island of Maui. She graduated from Lahainaluna High School as the class valedictorian. An attendee of Hawaii Pacific University, she graduated in the year 2000 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration majoring in Accounting. She has been a part of Mimi S. J. Hu, CPA, Inc., since May of 2001 with prior experiences in the banking industry and is bilingual in English and Ilocano. Aside from her professional career, Remalyn is a wife and mother of two children, Elijah and Jordyn.

Jan Alejandro – Senior Accountant   Jan joined the firm of Mimi S. J. Hu, CPA, Inc. in September of 2004. She is currently enrolled at the University of Hawaii - West Oahu seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration majoring in Accounting. Whenever possible, Jan enjoys traveling and going to the beach with her family.

Don Couch – I. T. Manager   Don has extensive background in computer systems management. He was a Systems Administrator for the Pacific Disaster Center prior to joining the County of Maui as an Executive Assistant to a former mayor and then Deputy Director of the Planning Department. Don joined Levin & Hu in January 2007. Don enjoys paddling and poker.

Peter D. Woods – Senior Accountant   Peter is a native of Maui. He is a graduate of the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration majoring in Accounting. Formerly in the agricultural business, Peter joined DK Levin, Company in 2006. Peter is currently pursuing his graduate degree in accounting as well as preparing for the CPA examination. He enjoys sports, jogging, the beach and investment research.

Alan Sears – Senior Accountant   Originally from Connecticut, Alan moved to Maui in 2004. He graduated from the University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in accounting in 1980. After working in the private industry for twenty-six years, fourteen of which as a Controller, Alan joined Levin & Hu, LLP in 2006. Alan enjoys sports and is an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

Marina Owen – Staff Accountant    Marina was born and raised in Russia. She attended the Federal Medical University of Volgograd for three and a half years before moving to Maui in 1995. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Information Systems in 2002 from Phoenix University. She is currently enrolled with the Keller Graduate School of Management pursuing her Master of Accounting and Financial Management degree. Marina joined Levin & Hu, LLP in March, 2006. In her spare time, she volunteers for a non-profit agency, focusing on cultural education for children. She is a mother of three: Anastasia, Xenia and Alexander.

Marija Berney – Staff Accountant   Marija was born and raised in Riga, Latvia. She attended the University of Latvia where she studied Economics and Accounting. In 2003 she attended the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands and graduated with a Bachelor degree in International Financial Economics. She moved to Maui in 2007 and joined Levin & Hu, LLP as a staff accountant. Marija enjoys traveling with her husband, shopping without her husband, walking on the beach, swimming, and other outdoor activities.

Jennifer Reynolds – Staff Accountant   Jennifer was born and raised in California. She graduated from Sonoma State University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. Shortly after that, she moved to Maui and joined Levin & Hu, LLP. She loves to travel and go to the beach.

Fae Casayuran – Bookkeepper   Fae was born and raised in Maui, Hawaii.  She is currently attending Maui Community College and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with a  major in accounting.  Fae worked as an administrative assistant at Baldwin High School before joining Levin & Hu, LLP in 2007 as a bookkeeper.  She enjoys going to the beach, dancing, and spending time with friends, family, and her dog Kainoa.

Bonnie Yurkanin – Administrative Assistant   Bonnie moved to Maui in 1973 where she met her husband on day she arrived. She worked as a medical assistant in many well known physicians’ offices over the last twenty years before joining Levin & Hu, LLP. She is a member of Unity Church where she serves on the Board of Trustees and as a chaplain. She is currently pursuing her degree in ministerial studies. Bonnie has two daughters. One attends Maui Community College and the other attends Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

Kathy Harima – Administrative Staff   Originally from Connecticut, Kathy moved to Hawaii in 1980. She spent twleve years at the Hyatt Regency Maui in the Accounting Department and fifteen years with two local CPA firms before joining Levin & Hu, LLP in 2007. Kathy enjoys music, traveling and working out at the YMCA but most of all, spending time with her 13 year old son, Riley.
